ABOUT THE SUSTAINABLY BRILLIANT INITIATIVE

Sustainably Brilliant is an initiative with one goal in mind… to raise awareness around the effects of carbon emissions throughout the diamond supply chain in an effort to drive positive change. Its specific focus is to bridge the gap from miner to retailer, thereby moving the entire supply chain towards a more socially, ethically and environmentally conscious future. It’s an ambitious endeavour that won’t happen overnight, but it's important to start the journey today.

 

The initiative came to life in July 2020 after Gemdax hosted a first-of-its-kind industry webinar on carbon neutrality. The more progressive mining companies and consumer brands have made strides towards carbon neutrality. The webinar highlighted the need for midstream companies to take affirmative action and bridge the gap in the supply chain.

 

By taking steps towards positive change, businesses will reap individual benefits, but also support a more sustainable outlook for the entire diamond industry.

 

Nine leading De Beers customers (Sightholders) have subscribed to the Sustainably Brilliant pledge: A promise to strive towards a zero-carbon footprint.  

 

The commitment made by each of these Sightholders is to take action now by focusing on implementing sustainable practices while also drastically reducing the amount of emissions they produce. These respected businesses also act as catalysts within their communities, bringing carbon neutrality to the forefront in the diamond sector.

 

The initiative has the support of De Beers, who has already made strides through ongoing research into carbon-neutral mining. As we evolve the industry’s positioning in the context of a more socially and ethically aware future, in the words of Stephen Lussier (Executive Vice President of consumer and brands at De Beers, and Chairman of the Natural Diamond Council):

 

"There is no task more important than inspiring consumers with what we call the Diamond Dream. Our mission is to educate consumers on the industry and positive social contribution diamonds make to the world today."

 

Sustainably Brilliant is a collaborative force to make this happen. With the backing of nine De Beers Sightholders already committed to the initiative, we are ready to take the first steps towards a more ethically conscious future.
